Interviewed by Esther Kimani

Through it all

Through it all

I have learnt to trust in Jesus

I have learnt to trust in God

Through it All

Through it All

I have learnt to depend

Upon His Word

Calvin heaved a sigh of relief when he finally sat down at the waiting room of St. Mary's hospital. He had walked a distance of 32 Kms for four hours from Uthiru to Lang'ata. A few minutes later, he went to the ward where he had left his wife who was a patient at the hospital. He walked in expectantly but the bed was empty.

1976

Calvin Ombasa was born in 1976 in Kisii South in Nyamarambe Division.

“My father had three wives, my mother was the third. She had ten children - I was the last born from our family. As for the rest of my siblings, I have no idea how many there are - probably twenty eight!” Calvin laughs.

“I didn't know my Dad since he died when I was a month old. It was mom who brought me up. Mom had been diabetic for several long years and was often admitted in hospital. It was during one of those admissions that she passed on,” Calvin sadly recalls.

My dreams were shattered

At the tender age of thirteen , Calvin suddenly found himself orphaned.

“After the burial, everyone went their way. I found myself alone in the homestead, my dreams for any future shattered. My sister went to boarding school and the rest just dispersed. I didn't know what to do or who to turn to. So I kept going to school, and taking care of the homestead which was now under my care. I remember it was the head teacher who paid my KCPE registration fees.

“After the exams, I went to stay with my brother in Eldoret. As soon as the results were out, I returned to Kisii to find out how I had performed. I had passed!” Calvin recalls.
