Overcoming Valley Experiences
By Wisdom Aseka
“Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort
me,”(Psalms 23:4 NKJV).
David was reflecting on the goodness of God which he experienced in the valley. He shares with us his divine secrets.
Notice that verses 1-3, 5-6 are mountain experiences. The first thing we learn is that God is the LORD of both the mountain and the valley. There is no place too high or too low that the LORD is not present. The Bible says ‘yea though,' which implies that everybody goes through
the valley. There are three kinds of valleys:
- Valleys from Our Foolishness -- the story of Jonah.
- Valleys from the Foe -- the story of Daniel in the den of lions.
- Valleys from the Father -- the story of the children of Israel.
1. Valleys from our Foolishness
This comes from our deliberate disobedience either out of fear or pain.
Jonah was commanded to preach against the city of Nineveh. This city was wicked and brutal towards the Jews. Therefore, Jonah decided to disobey because he thought that they deserved to die for mistreating his people. He fled from the LORD's presence (Jonah 1:1-4; 4:1).
His foolishness created a valley for him and every other innocent traveller in that ocean. Some decisions against God's will have led families to divorce, wrong careers and wrong ministries. How many times have ministries dragged their members into valleys? How many parents have dragged their children into problems? Disobedience brings valleys.
